Salmonella Carriers in Hospitalized Patients

Abstract
Two hundred and nineteen patients admitted to the Internal Medicine-ward of the Chonnam University Hospital, during six months from April to September 1968, were surveyed for detection of salmonella carriers, and bacteriological studies of the isolated strains were performed with following results
1. Five per, cent of the patients were found to be salmonella carriers, showing slightly higher rate in- females(5.34%) than in malcs(4.55%) and considerably higher rate in the older in the younger group of patients.
2. Totally eleven strains were isolated and they were identified as 4 different groups:
group B(1 strain), group C(4 strainsgroup D(4 strains) and group E (2 strains)
3. Sensitivities of the cultured strains to the various antibiotics were observed to be as following orders; chloramphenicol, neomycin, oxytetracycline, tetracycline, penicillin, and novobiocin.
All groups of strains were generally resistant to bacitracin and erythromycin.
4. As for distribution of multiple drug resistant strains, seven strains of isolated bacterial were resistant to three- antibiotics suchas>bacitracin, erythromycinand novobiocin.
5. Biological characters of the isolated-strains showed no particular differences in various groups.
